Speed & Pitch

Slow Down Music to Learn Guitar, Piano, or Any Instrument

Can't keep up with a fast solo? Slow it down, learn it note by note, then work up to speed.

The Practice Method

Every music teacher says the same thing: practice slowly, then speed up. But playing along with a recording at full speed is impossible when you're still learning the notes. The solution: slow the recording down to a comfortable speed, learn the passage, then gradually increase until you're playing along at full tempo.

Step by Step

1. Load the song into cut.audio's Speed & Pitch tool 2. Slow it down to 0.5x (half speed) — keep pitch unchanged 3. Listen and identify the notes or chords 4. Practice along at 0.5x until you can play it cleanly 5. Increase to 0.6x, practice until clean 6. Keep increasing in 0.1x increments 7. Celebrate when you nail it at 1.0x This progressive speed increase builds muscle memory at each level.

Tips for Each Instrument

Guitar: Slow down solos and riffs. At half speed, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and fast picking patterns become audible. Use the pitch control to transpose to standard tuning if the recording is tuned differently. Piano: Slow down runs and arpeggios. At 0.5x, you can hear each individual note in a chord. Great for transcribing by ear. Drums: Slow down fills and complex patterns. At half speed, ghost notes and kick patterns that are invisible at full tempo become clear. Bass: Slow down to hear bass lines that are buried in the mix. Lower playback speed also makes it easier to distinguish between notes in fast walking bass lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, by default. The Speed & Pitch tool separates speed and pitch. You can slow down to 0.5x and the music stays in the original key. This is essential for playing along with your instrument in standard tuning.

Use the Audio Cutter first to isolate the section you want to practice, then load that trimmed clip into the Speed & Pitch tool. This gives you a focused practice loop.
